It is more important than ever to stay informed about what’s happening around us, especially when it comes to events that affect our communities and how we engage in society.
On the BBC news website in early February 2025 there were three news stories, all relating to terrible incidents of lone attacker violence. The findings from the review into the killing of three people in a knife attack in Nottingham, the sentencing of the attacker who killed three young girls in a knife attack in Southport, and the killing of a 15-year-old boy in Sheffield in a knife attack highlight the ongoing challenges in defining, preventing and responding to violent acts in society.
We are increasingly seeing acts of extreme violence carried out by individuals, often with no clear ideological motive, yet influenced by online rhetoric and extremist narratives. These incidents challenge our understanding of terrorism and raise important questions about how we define and prevent such attacks.
Below, and via the attached link is a BBC article that goes in depth about the challenges of defining violent incidents as terrorism, and the implications of labelling these acts as a terrorist event.
Understanding these issues challenge us to think about how society can effectively prevent and respond and whether our current systems address modern threats. We hope you find it useful.
